Addiction Habits

Patriotic Soldiers

When you were in service, there were many chances to blow off steam, and you have had your chance to find time to go on drunk benders, and to try some illegal substances.  It is really important that you remain focused on your past habits, as just events, and try to merge into the new soldier at home, without the substances and drinks.

Your Life is Waiting

The more you go out and enjoy yourself with drinks, and take time to try different drugs, you are going to get sucked into the world of addiction.  It is not anything to be ashamed of, but it is very common with soldiers who return home.

The soldier at war, is dedicated to serving, and finds herself or himself often busy performing tasks, missions and new initiatives with focus and clarity.  When you return home, there is none of this.  If you bring this clarity and focus back into your day, and still work at home like you are in service, in service for yourself, you will be able to break free of boredom, and other habits that could become more than habits.

Do not give up on yourself Soldier

Even when you are home, you are still actually a soldier of war.  The very fact that you are bringing yourself home can be a mental challenge for you as a war hero.  The regret and emotion tied to this battle can lead you to try to forget your emotions.  Do not get sucked into the world of bars and too much forgetting each night.  You are only going to really allow yourself some tragedy, in that your life is waiting to happen, and you need to stay crisp, focused, and find yourself once again.

Dealing with Stress: Message to Family Members

What may be easy for some people, the noise, the normal day-to-day concerns of life, working, and new technology can be very difficult for returning soldiers.  Often they have been in isolated areas of battle, away from normal society, and in foreign lands in foreign languages.  Do not underestimate the strength of your soldier.  They have been through hell and back!

Take time to let them adjust.  Do not push, gently, and calmly let them find help.  Work with your friends and family to get the support you need while your service man and woman find their feet.  The crush of being in battle, being on threat 24/7, can make any one jumpy.  The constant noise of children, pets, and TV, can be very unnerving for the human brain returning from a stressful and quiet place of battle.  Battle can be noisy, but extremely quiet as well.

So, some advice:  take some time to keep the news off, keep the TV off, just for a little while.  Take some time for your children to find a great new activity at school, so they remain growing and learning, and then can give your soldier the much needed adjustment time.

Bells, whistles and any constant noise can be very unsettling for the returning hero.  Keep a pace of calm and peace, whenever you can.

A Satire of War : Not a Funny Topic

I don’t know about you, but the following video disturbed me, and this is what it was intended.  We all take our freedom, and our place in history too lightly.  It is my pleasure to be here, writing to you dear freedom fighter, and bring you some recognition that you deserve!  As I learn more about the wars that are going on each day, I think of you, the soldier.  I do not care about the scandal or the political reasons why we are at war.  This is not the concern, or the focus.  My concern is with you, the men and women of our country that fought for good honor to our country, and brought us purpose.

We all should be grateful, that our children, do not have to defend themselves, because their government does not have a soldier’s force to protect them.  We all should remember that the ability to produce a satire, like the one shown, is brought to us by our valued members of our armed services.

I salute you freedom fighter, and I am proud of you.  Sometimes, it takes a goofy video like the one below to remind us all, how valued our freedom is.

Your New Year is Now

If you are working on returning home, and you have decided that the time is going to be difficult, then it will be.  There are many ways to avoid becoming too negative in your new life.  Here are some steps to stay positive, move forward, and avoid becoming a soldier stuck in time.

Circular Mindset Paths are Dangerous

Any time you find yourself thinking in a way that is mostly circular, that is, only one frame of thought over and over again, you are becoming stuck.  Do not let any one idea become your focus.  If you are finding you are experiencing the same thought or belief over and over again, the best thing to do is to find a new experience.  Go to the library, and get a new book, tape or a magazine, and try to evict that thought from your mind for one day. It will help you find a new frame of mind, and move you forward.

Negative thoughts are not the way

Positivity can be very alluring when it produces positive results.  You will have more trouble getting a positive thought from a series of negative mind thoughts.  It is hard to become positive, especially if you have been negative for some time, but imagine your perfect day ahead, and move forward with your new positive edge.

Imagine your perfect new world and strive for it

Just as you began your initiation to become a soldier, and found success at it, you will find a new life that brings your goals and dreams forward!  You can become the best person for you and your family, and find a way to still help those that you love and all of your dreams as well.  It is more than important that your dreams become your focus.

Find Your Passion

Being a soldier makes you a passionate person, and a hard worker.  You are not a dedicated lazy person, you are someone who is willing to work for what they believe in.  It is who you are!  When you leave the safe environment of the soldier’s life, you are going to move that passion and dedication to a new direction.  The direction is up to you!

Find you niche in business and never stop moving forward

You may not be ready for change.  You have only begun to get used to the soldier’s way, and the regime.  This can be a hard transition.  But, if you have the open mind to accept that this is what you are meant to do, and you are meant to help others in a different way, you are going to find that passion once again.   I do not want you to stop your search for that perfect new area that is not being fulfilled.  There are many great options for a strong and dedicated person such as yourself.  When you decide where your talents are best suited, move forward to tackling that process.

Motivate those that need Understanding

Sometimes you may see the opening in your new life, and your loved ones need help seeing your new path.  It can be difficult, especially if you have health issues, or are struggling with depression.  You need to find that fire, the motivator that led you towards battle, and struggle no more.  The communication between you and your family should be crystal clear.  They need to understand your reasons to connect with your passion, and what it will do for you and them.

Continue your new path soldier, and you will find your new life is very positive.

Regime to Choices

Civilian life is not an easy transition for most soldiers.  Coming from a life where you are given orders, have no choices to make, to an ever growing crazy world of decisions and choices, is a difficult path for most servicemen and women.  But how do you find the Support you need, and let others thank you for your service? One step is to do a little research, as there are great sites to link to here, ideas to how to motivate towards civilian life, and how to maintain your new civilian life.

Decisions, decisions

The hardest thing to decide is how to start your new life.  Once you are back home, you may have a little money saved, have some educational opportunities that you can try, and maybe a dream deep down that is very different from the military.

Maybe you have always wanted to work in a restaurant, and learn a skill there to propel you into owning your own little restaurant.  The dream is there, and it can take some time to actually see the door in front of you, but without, the dream you would have nothing.  Here is the start, and you should celebrate that you have the place you know you want to be!

Start with the library, and search for business books, and some books on your favorite subject, cooking.  You can evolve into that small business person quicker than you would think.  It will require dedication, persistence, and resolve, but you already have those skills, as you were trained how to follow orders, and find the follow through in every action you take.  Your dream is the first step, and your first choice.

You can break free of the organization and embrace the freedom

Sometimes the new open day, can get away from you.  Before you know it, it can be 3 o’clock in the afternoon, and you have lost the entire day!  Do not feel overwhelmed, just follow your dream, and build a plan on how to make it happen.

  1. Build a Plan:  Just like any initiative in the field or any recon mission, you have a start, the information, and the end point.  This is no different, but there are new variables, as you have no one to report to, and give you advice to help you along.  In this case, rely on your friends and family for your support network, and build off of their advice and assistance.  You can not do this alone, so do not try to encompass that circle by yourself.
  2. Research and Follow-through:  Your best defense to see success in any new dream, is to find out as much as you can to get that new job, to build that business, or pursue the education you want to complete.  You will need to fill out paperwork, apply for loans, have a plan, and know where to go to begin your process.
  3. Action and Persistence:  Your activities that you need to complete should be written, tagged to dates and adequately tied to your resources that you will need to complete them.  And, along the way, know there will be hiccups, and you should not be swayed by these walls, but even more dedicated to getting them done.

You will find yourself along the way

If you are looking for this dream, and your new life, you are going to be always pulling from your past.  It is not easy to leave the bad experiences behind, but a mindset that they are in the past, can be helpful, but not always perfectly successful.  You will have hard days, and you should know this is part of the growth period you are experiencing.  You will be stronger if you do take the jump and move forward in a new direction.

Providing for Yourself and Your Country

The best thing you can do for yourself when you return back to civilian life, is find a purpose and a goal.  The many issues associated with this initiative can be very difficult to ensure success, but your goals should start out simple, and should be a daily regime for you.  Here is how to find a peaceful mindset each day when you return to Civilian Life:

1. Be sure to keep a daily journal

One way to keep yourself on task, is to write down how you are feeling, what is motivating you to find success each day, and what you are searching for.  You may need to look for one goal, whether it is getting a job, or to help your family, or start a new educational path.  You are going to find the larger the goal, the harder it will be for you to stay on task. But, if your goal is very lofty, like the ones described, you can break them down into many parts:

Educational Goal:

  • What school should I check out?
  • What subjects am I interested in?
  • I can pay for some of the classes, so how do I pay for the rest?
  • When do classes start, and when do I have to apply?
  • How do I find out about financial aid?
  • When can I meet with a career counselor?

Job Goal

  • Where is the local job board to assist me?
  • What kind of role do I want to play, full-time or part-time?
  • How much money do I need to pay the bills?
  • Am I happy with just working for paying bills, can I do more?

Family Goals

  • What can I do to be more of help?
  • How has my family suffered while I was away?
  • Do we need to plan a vacation together?
  • Can we afford to move into a bigger/smaller/better home?
  • Can I learn a new task/new job while adding to my family?

WOW!  You really have your work cut out for you, don’t you think?  It is hard to think about all of these answers all at once, but you may need an entire year to come up with the answers to the questions above.

Just like when you were in service, keep a scheduled day

The key to success, being happy as a civilian, is taking the regime of the military life, and incorporating it into your daily civilian life.  Break each day down, write down your questions/answers, and keep up with your journals.

What do you think, can you find success this way?

Returning back to civilian life is a constant struggle of new unanswered questions.  Do not expect it all to fall into place immediately!
